Usability testing is about getting the response of the users before launching a website. Therefore, this user-centered test helps assess the performance and functionality of a website. This testing method is effective to understand the ease of using a website and how the website meets the expectations of the users. In order to conduct this testing, an organization invites some participants who pretend to be real users to test the website. The organization asks the participants to fulfill certain tasks using their website and observes the actions of the users. On the basis of the user’s performance, the observers understand whether there is an issue on the website that creates any problem or obstacle to the user’s navigation. Therefore, the usability testing method is essential to increase the web presence and satisfaction of the users.

The Purpose of Usability Testing:

The ultimate purpose of usability testing is to attract more traffic by offering ease of using the website. When in an online business, you want to enhance your sales, you can make people spending time on your website by fulfilling their goals. Thus, to understand the goals of the users, you should know what users like and dislike. Usability testing helps you to get this insight where real users participate in the test and provide feedback. Getting feedback from real users is better than receiving feedback from some who already know your website. This is because of the fact that you will be able to understand the issues that users in real-time might face and this testing is more bias-free.

Different Kinds of Usability Testing:

Depending on the period of development and purpose, usability testing can be of three types such as-

i) Explorative Testing:

In order to assess the design of the website in the early development period, this testing method is effective. This usability testing method helps to understand the thinking process and conceptual consideration of the users.

ii) Assessment Testing:

This testing method evaluates the technological elements during the mid-stage of product development. This usability testing is effective to understand the overall usability, satisfaction, and effectiveness of a website.

iii) Comparative Testing:

If you want to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your website by comparing it with other sites, this usability test is suitable for you. You can also make a comparison between two designs and select the best design for your website.

Costs vs Benefits:

The cost of the usability testing depends upon mainly three factors such as-  (i) the number of testing days, ii) the number of participants, and iii) the team size. In spite of the cost, usability testing provides several benefits such as-

  1.  You can have an idea about whether your website provides sufficient ease to complete the tasks.
  2. This testing helps you to find out the minor errors as well as major bugs and issues that create problems for the users.
  3. You can fix the flaws and identify opportunities for further progress.
  4. Above all, usability testing helps you to know what the users expect from you, and therefore, you can solve the problems to satisfy the users.
